چکیده

[1] The Urey ratio describes the contribution of internal heat production to planetary-scale energy balance, and knowing this thermal budget for Earth is essential to understand its long-term evolution. Internal heat production is provided by the decay of radiogenic elements, whose budget is constrained by geochemical models of Earth. Understanding the thermal budget thus requires contributions from both geophysics and geochemistry. The purpose of this review is to elucidate various geochemical and geophysical arguments and to delineate the most likely thermal budget of Earth. While the bulk Earth Urey ratio is probably 0.35, the convective Urey ratio is estimated to be 0.2. That is, only 20% of convective heat flux seems to originate from radiogenic elements at present, so the rest should be supported by secular cooling. A likely scenario for Earth’s thermal history indicates that the peculiarity of today’s significant imbalance between heat production and heat loss may result from the initiation of plate tectonics in the early Earth.

COMPARATIVE DEGASSING HISTORY OF EARTH AND VENUS. S. Franck and C. Bounama,

Introduction: Parameterized convection models have provided important results for the thermal history of the Earth and of other planets [1,2,3]. Schubert et al. [4] calculated a secular cooling of about 150°C-300°C since the Archaean and showed that a substantial portion of the present terrestrial heat flux is primordial with a Urey ratio of 0.65 to 0.85. For the first time Jackson and Pollack ...

Thermal evolution of the Earth: effects of volatile exchange between atmosphere and interior

A parameterized model of mantle convection that includes the effects of volatile exchange between the mantle and the surface reservoir and the softening of the mantle by the dissolved volatiles is used to study the thermal history of the Earth. It is assumed that the activation energy for temperature-dependent solid-state creep is a linear function of weight percent of volatiles. The mantle deg...

Pitfalls in modeling mantle convection with internal heat production

The mantle of the Earth, and probably of other terrestrial planets as well, is heated from below and within. The heating mode of mantle convection is thus mixed heating, and it is also time dependent because the amount of heat-producing isotopes in the mantle is steadily decreasing by radioactive decay and because the basal heat flux originating in the cooling of the core can vary with time. Th...

Physics of multiscale convection in Earth’s mantle: Evolution of sublithospheric convection

[1] We investigate the physics of multiscale convection in Earth’s mantle, characterized by the coexistence of large-scale mantle circulation associated with plate tectonics and smallscale sublithospheric convection. In part 2 of our study, the temporal and spatial evolution of sublithospheric convection is studied using two-dimensional whole mantle convection models with temperatureand depth-d...

Energetics of mantle convection and the fate of fossil heat

[1] Reconstructing the thermal history of the Earth, consistent with the low concentration of heat-producing elements in convecting mantle as well as with modest secular cooling required by geological records, has been a major challenge in geophysics and geochemistry. By developing the self-consistent energetics of plate-tectonic mantle convection, we show that the low Urey ratio of convecting ...
